What is a stoma?

Stoma comes from the Greek language meaning "mouth" or "opening".

The general term stoma is often used to describe a colostomy, ileostomy or urostomy.

A Stomal Therapy Nurse is a registered nurse who has completed further studies. They have advanced knowledge of wound, stoma and continence care.

A colostomy is a surgically created opening of the colon (large bowel) brought to the outside of the abdomen. 

An ileostomy is a surgically created opening of the ileum (small bowel) brought to the outside of the abdomen.

A urostomy is the surgically created ileal conduit (a segment of small bowel) brought to the outside of the abdomen, to allow urinary diversion .
